Going up, the boat is often too short to leave the boat in gear at the gate and climb up the ladder, so I climb out where I can (or bowhaul in, if possble), and tie up to a bollard. In fact I always tie to a bollard - or something - to avoid the boat drifting too far & pulling the rope down with it.
